| Insider's Guide to Luton |
When you want the inside scoop on where to go and what to do when you're away from home there's nobody better to ask than the locals. We've asked our team to tell us their favourite haunts, where to get a great meal or how they like to spend a free day so here are just a few recommendations of how to spend your time in Luton!
For ‘food lovers’The Wellington Street in the town offers lots of cuisines to choose from for food lovers. There you can choose from India, Italian, Peking, Chinese and plenty more from around the world. However, if you have had a long day and would like to get food delivered to your hotel door I can recommend a few famous names in Luton like HB Curry which serves one of the best and unique tasting curries in Luton. One of the best attributes of HB curry is that they can adjust the food according to your taste.Apart from Indian cuisine if you have a taste palette for Chinese cuisine, no one else in Luton can get it right apart from ‘Yummy Yummy’ Chinese in the Town centre. For those who would like to go out to eat in a cosy place I would recommend ‘The Green’. This restaurant is situated in Harpenden and offers three separate restaurants. This place has a magnificent Tapas bar with lounge style sitting and music on the ground floor which is attached to an open area called ‘ Plancha Garden’ for the guests to have BBQ food made by their chef. You can also experience the taste of cuisines from Asia such as Indian, Thai and Chinese in the Dine Asia restaurant which is also part of ‘The Green’ on the first floor. The place offers a beautiful and lively atmosphere for one to relax and enjoy. - Sushil Gupta, Deputy General Manager Local attractions for families with childrenLuton has many attractions to keep the kids entertained and the adults sane! Having lived in Luton for my entire life and with two children ages 9 and 2 I can recommend attractions for all the family if you are stuck for something to do and the kids are driving you crazy.Within 3 miles from the hotel, Woodside animal farm and Leisure Park, is a great place for the whole family. It has a wide range of activities such as tractor rides and animal feeding. You can pick your own fresh eggs straight from the chicken pen and the farm shop has a wide range of fresh organic cakes, jams, breads, wines, juices etc. The cafe has a lunch menu available and when you’ve seen everything around the farm the adults can relax and watch the kids run riot in the huge indoor play area which is located right next to the seating in the cafe. They have recently lowered their prices to £5 per adult and £4 for a child. Children under 1 go free. Luton’s Stockwood Park and Discovery Centre has recently undergone a £6m transformation. This transformation includes;
The King William is a 17thcentury country pub located on a quiet village green around 2 miles from the Hotel. The extensive menu offers good value and extensive dishes. The King William has recently been reburbished and has a beautiful decking area and an indoor play area which has proved very popular. Another attraction which won’t leave you wondering how you spent so much is Wardown Park Museum, again located just two miles from the airport. The museum’s collection include Luton life, Luton’s history in the Hat and lace industry, and Beds and Herts Regiment from 1881-1958. With Luton’s river Lee running through it is also a great place to feed the ducks or even go for a rowing boat ride during the summer months. There is a new park and a hot food and ice cream hut located next to the river. Within walking distance from Wardown Park is Bath Road Swimming and leisure centre. With three pools and a large viewing area this will suit the whole family. There is a large pool with 3 different level diving boards, a smaller kid’s pool and a heated Dolphin pool for any new additions to the family! They have a Sauna and Steam room and have Sun Beds available for Mum and Dad. - Jo Pole, Mum and Reservation Manager Transport to Holiday Inn Express Luton AirportThere are many ways to reach the hotel , by air, rail and road. If you are arriving by train our nearest train station to the hotel is Luton Parkway, First Capital Connect run a shuttle service from this station to the airport, approximately every 15 minutes, if ask the driver nicely they will stop outside the hotel and drop you off.If you are arriving by air, you can walk down to the hotel, if you do not have too much luggage come out of the airport and follow the road down to the hotel, it should only take you 5 to 10 minutes, you can make use of the stairs which will bring you into our car park or you can walk round the building (bear in mind this is slightly up hill) and come through the main car park entrance. Or you could treat of self to a taxi which should cost no more than £5 – Angie Holland, Guest Service Manger The views and opinions expressed in the contents above are those of the individuals mentioned and do not necessarily reflect the views of Holiday Inn Express or assosciated organisations.
